Rodrigo Rato targeted by Prosecutor’s Office in trial’s closing phase: “He is a controlling man accustomed to leadership”

Battles Continue in Rodrigo Rato’s Anti-Corruption Trial as Elena Lorente Presents Final Report

The anti-corruption prosecutor, Elena Lorente, has presented her final report in court against former IMF managing director Rodrigo Rato. In her report, Lorente leveled harsh accusations against Rato, claiming that he had been hiding significant assets abroad for many years through instrumental companies to maintain a facade of legality. Lorente emphasized Rato’s control over the scheme and his evasion of taxes by managing a network of interrelated companies.

Throughout the trial, Rato has rejected the allegations as fabrication, leading to tense exchanges with the prosecutor and court. The defense has attempted to challenge the incriminating thesis by presenting evidence of innocence, which Lorente has dismissed as traps and illusions. Despite Rato’s attempts to explain the origin of his foreign funds, Lorente dismantled his explanations, citing inconsistencies and questioning his motives for participating in the 2012 tax amnesty.

In response to Lorente’s arguments, Rato refuted the defense’s case and criticized her attempt to assert control over the judicial proceedings. He highlighted her refusal to answer questions from Anti-Corruption and State Attorney’s Office as a manipulative tactic. The trial is ongoing with Lorente continuing to present her case before the State Attorney’s Office while defense has their turn. As this case unfolds, it remains to be seen what consequences will follow for both parties involved.
