Switzerland aims to be present, but not directly in the center

Switzerland’s Dilemma: Joining or Aligning in International Sanctions Against Russia

In Switzerland, there has been much debate on Wednesday about whether the country should officially join the group of countries formed by the USA to implement Russia sanctions. The National Council in Switzerland decided that Switzerland should not become an official member of this group. A majority of the council believes that it is not in Switzerland’s best interest to align itself with the US camp.

Switzerland has always been a neutral country, even during the Cold War. Its neutrality has served it well, and it remains committed to maintaining its independence and neutrality in international affairs. However, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, pressure on Switzerland to take sides has increased. While some Swiss politicians want to join forces with other countries and impose sanctions on Russia, others are hesitant because they fear losing their independence and neutrality on the global stage.

The debate around Swiss participation in an international “Repo” working group to implement sanctions against Russia highlights this tension. While the USA desires Swiss membership in this group, Switzerland is hesitant due to concerns about losing its independence and neutrality. Supporters argue that joining the repo group would increase the implementation of sanctions against Russia and provide Switzerland with a say in decision-making, but critics fear that this could compromise its independence and force it to adopt sanctions it does not support.

Some argue that Swiss membership could have negative consequences such as being subjected to cross-border controls by other member countries, which raises valid concerns among skeptics. However, supporters say that technical exchanges with repo member states have already taken place without any official membership status. It seems that while Switzerland is considering joining the repo group, there are no recent foreign pressures pushing for membership at present time.

Overall, Switzerland’s decision not to join the repo group reflects its commitment to maintaining its neutrality and independence in international affairs while also aligning itself with Western countries’ economic sanctions against Russia through adopting EU sanctions measures against Moscow.
