French bakers break world record by making longest baguette

French Bakers Break World Record for Longest Handmade Baguette Measuring 140.53 Meters

On May 5, 2024, a team of 18 French bakers set a new world record for the longest baguette. The previous record was held by Italy and had been set in 2019 with a baguette measuring 132.62 meters. This time around, the French bakers created a baguette that was even longer, measuring 140.53 meters.

The event took place during the Suresnes Baguette Show near Paris, where the bakers kneaded and shaped the dough on site before baking it in a rolling oven. The baguette had to be at least 5 centimeters thick throughout its length to qualify for the record. The traditional process began at 3 a.m., with supervision starting at 5 a.m. A specially designed mobile oven was used for the attempt, and after the baguette was finished, its length was measured and verified by a representative from Guinness World Records.

Dominique Anract, president of the French National Confederation of Boulangerie et Patisserie, praised the bakers for their efforts and called setting a record for the longest handmade baguette true collective sportsmanship. As a gesture of goodwill, part of the baguette was cut into pieces and distributed to the public while the remainder was given to homeless people.

The artisanal know-how and culture of baguette bread were recognized in 2022 when they were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This latest world record-breaking attempt further highlights the importance of baguette-making in French culture and the dedication of bakers to their craft.

In conclusion, this achievement is being celebrated as a proud moment for France as they reclaimed their title from Italy in creating world’s longest handmade baguette measuring 140.53 meters long during Suresnes Baguette Show near Paris on May 5th, 2024
