Establishing a mentally healthy work environment: Helpful tips

Breaking the Stigma: How Workplaces are Prioritizing Mental Health and Making a Difference

A recent survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that over one in five people feel that their work environment has negatively impacted their mental health. In response to this, Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA Houston) was awarded The Bell Seal, which recognizes workplaces that prioritize mental health.

According to MHA Houston President Renae Vania Tomczak, creating a mentally safe space in the workplace starts with setting an example of self-care. This demonstrates to employees the value and understanding the company holds for their well-being as human beings.

To achieve a mentally healthy workplace, companies can implement various initiatives such as providing paid time off, establishing relaxation spaces in the office, and implementing Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) that offer free therapy and other resources. Tomczak emphasized that these initiatives can be cost-effective and show employees that their mental health is valued.

Additionally, surveying employees about their mental health experiences and using that feedback to develop support systems within the organization can also help create a mentally healthy work environment. This investment in mental health can have immeasurable returns.
