Soushi Saga: Fifteen Students Hospitalized after Suspected Food Poisoning from Street Vendors in Ho Chi Minh City’s Elementary Schools
Fifteen students from four elementary schools in Thu Duc City were rushed to Le Van Thinh Hospital for emergency treatment due to suspected food poisoning. The majority of the students had eaten sushi from street vendors outside their schools, causing symptoms such as vomiting and dizziness upon arrival at the hospital on May 2. The hospital reported the cases to various authorities, including the Department of Health, Department of Food Safety, and other relevant agencies. Doctors diagnosed the students with gastrointestinal infections and suspected food poisoning, and after receiving intravenous fluids and antibiotics, their conditions improved significantly.
Among the 15 pediatric patients, eight were from Thanh My Loi primary school, three from Binh Trung Dong primary school, one each from Nguyen Van Troi and Nguyen The Vinh primary schools, and two children from unknown schools. The majority of the cases had consumed sushi purchased from street vendors near their schools. Authorities conducted investigations at the elementary schools to determine the cause of the food poisoning.
In response to this incident and other cases of food poisoning among students in Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Food Safety launched an Action Month for Food Safety. Director Pham Khanh Phong Lan warned parents about the dangers of consuming food from street vendors, collective kitchens, and schools during hot weather when bacteria can easily grow on food. To ensure food safety in the city, inspections and surprise checks of food businesses are being intensified by authorities.
