Over 200 individuals detained as camp at University of California cleared

Police Dismantle Pro-Palestinian Camp at UCLA, Arrest 209 Individuals

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department dismantled a pro-Palestinian camp set up at the University of California (UCLA) in protest against Israeli Government policies. The operation resulted in the arrest of 209 individuals, including both students and university staff, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The arrests were formalized in the parking lot of the Los Angeles Central Court, while other detainees were transported by buses to the Metropolitan Detention Center of the Los Angeles Police Department. Those arrested have been given food, water, and access to public services, as well as transportation services. Most have been cited and released for illegal assembly and will have to appear in court at a later date.

A device comprised of about 250 police officers with heavy riot gear participated in the operations. The police assault began at dawn with several flares launched on protesters, who responded by using fire extinguishers against officers. After a pitched battle and eviction of the camp, a trail of remains and garbage, as well as numerous graffiti by protesters on nearby buildings have been left behind. Excavators have been used to remove the remains of the camp.

According to Rubio from California Highway Patrol’s statements to CNN television network there is approximately one police officer for each protester who was in camp. Although he has ruled out any injuries for now, Rubio stated that protesters had thrown fire extinguishers and water bottles at police officers.

UCLA had previously released a notice announcing this police intervention and warning those still in the camp that they may be committing a crime. He has warned students that they risk “disciplinary measures”, including expulsion from the university due to their involvement in these events which began two days ago when UCLA declared camping illegal and worsened when pro-Israel protesters attacked activists on Tuesday night taking hours for police intervention to stop violence
