Detecting Salmonella Bacteria in Specimens from Poisoned Children in Dong Nai

Bang Bread Poisoning: Dong Nai Boy Recovers from Salmonella Infection, Raises Awareness of Food Safety Risks

On the evening of May 6, a representative from Children’s Hospital 2 (HCMC) announced that a stool sample from a 14-year-old child who was poisoned after eating Bang bread in Dong Nai tested positive for Salmonella bacteria. The boy was admitted to the hospital with fever and green liquid diarrhea four days ago. According to family members, he ate bread bought at a Bang store in Long Khanh city, Dong Nai, on April 30.

The doctor diagnosed the patient with a bacterial intestinal infection and prescribed antibiotics and supportive medications. Currently, the boy’s symptoms have improved. Salmonella is a leading cause of diarrhea globally and can cause severe illnesses in many large-scale poisoning cases. It enters the human body through food and drink, producing toxins that damage the intestinal mucosa, causing abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. If not rehydrated promptly, the patient can become dehydrated, have low blood pressure, hypotension, multi-organ failure, and even death. Large amounts of bacteria can enter the bloodstream, causing life-threatening sepsis.

Salmonella grows quickly in hot and humid environments when slaughtering livestock and poultry if not cleaned properly. The bacteria can spread into the environment and contaminate foods like meat and poultry eggs. Eating raw eggs or undercooked eggs can also lead to Salmonella infection. Vegetables are also susceptible to Salmonella spread from animal feces.

Recently, blood tests of three critically ill children treated in Dong Nai showed they were infected with E. coli bacteria, which often appears in fresh products like beef, fresh milk, juice, cheese, raw fruits
