Meta unveils Quest operating system for manufacturers including Asus, Microsoft, and Lenovo

Meta Horizon OS Expands to Third-Party Hardware Manufacturers: Lenovo, Microsoft, and Asus Join Forces to Bring More Options to Consumers

Meta Horizon OS, the operating system that powers Meta Quest mixed reality (MR) devices, is now open to other third-party hardware manufacturers. Lenovo, Microsoft, and Asus are the first to adopt it in their new products. The goal of this measure is to provide more options to consumers and offer a broader ecosystem in which developers can build their applications.

Asus’ gaming division Republic of Gamers (ROG) will develop MR glasses for high-performance title gaming. Lenovo will leverage its expertise in co-designing the Oculus Rift S and engineering devices like the ThinkPad to develop MRI equipment for productivity, learning, and entertainment. Meta is collaborating with Xbox to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming in beta version to its Meta Quest headset so that players can access Xbox video games on a virtual 2D screen in MR.

Meta is also working with Xbox to launch a limited edition of the Meta Quest helmet inspired by Microsoft’s gaming division. All devices in the new hardware ecosystem powered by Meta Horizon OS will benefit from Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon chips, just like Meta Quest 3 already does with Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.

As Meta opens up Meta Horizon OS to more original equipment manufacturers, it expands the ways app developers can reach audiences and consumers, erasing the limits between the Meta Horizon Store and the App Lab collaboration platform. App Lab titles will soon appear in a dedicated section in the online store on all devices, making them more visible to a wider audience. A new spatial applications framework is being developed to allow developers to bring mobile applications to Meta Horizon OS or create new experiences for this operating system.

The opening of Meta Horizon OS to third-party hardware manufacturers represents an exciting opportunity for both developers and consumers alike. With more options available on different platforms, users can choose from a wider range of products that meet their specific needs and preferences.

Meta’s efforts towards building a next-generation computing platform have resulted in an innovative operating system that prioritizes people over exclusive use cases. The collaboration with other companies such as Lenovo, Microsoft, and Asus has allowed for greater expansion of this platform’s capabilities.

Overall, this move by Meta highlights its commitment towards providing developers with new tools and resources that enable them to create cutting-edge technology products that cater to diverse consumer needs.
