Ruben Vardanyan’s son reports heightened detention conditions following hunger strike

Artsakh’s Ruben Vardanyan: Father, Politician, or Prisoner?

Davit Vardanyan, son of former Minister of State of Artsakh Ruben Vardanyan, expressed concerns about his father’s condition after he began a hunger strike while imprisoned in Azerbaijan. In an interview with CNN, Davit Vardanyan mentioned that his father used to contact his mother weekly but has not been in touch since starting the hunger strike. However, after two weeks of silence, he informed his sister that he is now in solitary confinement, indicating that the conditions of his imprisonment have become stricter.

Davit Vardanyan also mentioned that it is possible that his father feared for his life due to his association with Russian President Vladimir Putin and inclusion on Ukraine’s list of sanctioned persons. Christian Amanpour, an anchor for CNN, speculated whether this may have led to persecution by individuals with differing political views. While Davit Vardanyan did not directly address the question, he emphasized that his father became involved in politics only after significant events in Artsakh, demonstrating a willingness to take risks to support his community.
