NASA asks community for feedback on space technology priorities

Collaboration Drives NASA’s Space Technology Prioritization for Future Missions

NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) is seeking community input to refine its priorities in space technology development to enhance missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. With nearly 190 national space technology needs identified, the agency is looking for feedback from the American aerospace community to prioritize these for future endeavors.

Dr. Kurt Vogel, associate administrator for Space Technology at NASA Headquarters, highlighted the importance of a more collaborative approach in addressing the challenges presented by future missions. By engaging with stakeholders, NASA aims to better align its technological development efforts with the needs of those involved, leading to more efficient investments.

The initiative involves gathering input on critical technology shortfalls such as additive manufacturing, cryogenic fluid management, and in-situ resource utilization. This feedback will inform NASA’s resource allocation decisions and help meet mission requirements effectively.

In the coming months, stakeholders from U.S. industry, academia, and government will provide input through virtual meetings and surveys. NASA will then analyze and prioritize the data collected, planning to share the results with stakeholders and the public.

The prioritization resulting from this process will guide adjustments in NASA’s technology development efforts to align with identified priorities. Additionally, it is expected to create new commercial opportunities and support the growth of the U.S. space economy.

NASA intends to make this feedback and workshop process an annual event to continually adapt its investment strategies based on stakeholder input, ensuring transparency and engagement
