US Track and Field Reverses Decision to Send Team to World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru after Safety Assurances
The United States Track and Field (USATF) recently announced that it will be sending a team to the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru in August, after reversing its initial decision not to participate. This decision came following consultation with World Athletics and the Local Organizing Committee in Lima, assuring safety measures were in place for the event.
The initial decision not to send a US team was based on concerns about travel advisories, competitive readiness, and safety. However, USATF has now confirmed that they will be sending a team to represent Team USA at the Championships taking place August 26-31, 2024 in Lima, Peru.
Safety and well-being of athletes, coaches, managers, and staff remain a top priority for USATF. They are committed to providing the highest level of competitive opportunities for their athletes on their journey to success. The full team announcement will be made after the USATF Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
This marks the first time since 2021 that the U.S. will participate in the World U20 Championships, which were held in Nairobi, Kenya due to safety concerns and COVID-19. In return, the U.S. will host the 2026 World U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
