Health Department Acknowledges Response from Trails Carolina Therapy Camp

Trails Carolina Under Fire: Addressing Deficiencies Report Following Tragic Death of Camper”.

In the aftermath of a tragic incident that led to the death of a 12-year-old camper at Trails Carolina, a therapy camp for troubled teens in the mountains, state officials have issued a deficiencies report. However, the camp has disputed this report and is working with state officials to address any issues that were found in it.

The incident occurred in February at the camp, which is located near Lake Toxaway just south of Asheville. Following the boy’s death, DHHS launched an investigation and removed all other teens from the camp. As a result, their license was suspended.

In response to the deficiencies report and potential license revocation, Trails Carolina submitted a correction plan on April 4. The camp has acknowledged the need for changes and outlined plans for improved incident reporting procedures, increased communication with parents or guardians, and changes in the administration of medication to teens.

Despite their commitment to making these adjustments, Trails Carolina officials have made it clear that they do not agree with the state’s report. They maintain that there is no official determination regarding the cause of death from medical examiner yet and any speculation regarding this incident is premature.

In addition to being fined $18,000 in March for its mistakes, Trails Carolina continues to work closely with DHHS officials to address any concerns and improve its programming for troubled teens.
