New Science Director Joins Alaska Groundfish Group

New Science Projects Director at Alaska Seafood Cooperative: Sarah Webster Brings Extensive Knowledge to Sustainable Seafood Production

Sarah Webster, a seasoned fisheries scientist with extensive experience in Alaska fisheries research, has been appointed as the new science projects director at the Alaska Seafood Cooperative (AKSC). She is succeeding John Gauvin, who held the position for nearly three decades and will continue to work on some of the cooperative’s ongoing science projects.

The AKSC is a cooperative of Amendment 80 fleet that fishes for flatfish, Pacific Ocean perch, and Atka mackerel in Alaska. Webster brings with her a wealth of knowledge in marine science and a proven track record of conducting research that has practical applications for the fishing industry. In her previous role as a fisheries scientist with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, she focused on recreational groundfish research in the charter fishing sector. She also managed research programs at Alaska Pacific University’s Fisheries, Aquatic Science, and Technology Program where she supported projects across multiple industries.

Webster’s expertise in fisheries science will be instrumental in helping AKSC members reduce bycatch and minimize the impact of fishing on marine habitats. The cooperative collaborates with fishery scientists from NOAA and other institutions to conduct research aimed at modifying fishing practices and gear to achieve these goals. With Webster at the helm, AKSC is well-positioned to continue its mission of promoting sustainable seafood production in Alaska while ensuring that its members receive accurate scientific information to inform their decision-making processes.
