Hemorrhoids on the Rise: Understanding and Preventing This Common Health Concern for Office Workers and Beyond

Hemorrhoids are a common health concern among many people, and this condition has seen an increase in the number of patients at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. In the first three months of the year, about 900 patients were seen with hemorrhoids, which is a significant increase from the previous year. According to Dr. Nguyen Van Hau from the Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery, many patients come for treatment when their symptoms worsen. Hemorrhoids can significantly impact a person’s health and quality of life, causing itching and pain in the anus, especially during bowel movements. They account for about 35-50% of colorectal diseases.

Office workers who sit for long periods are particularly susceptible to developing hemorrhoids. Prolonged sitting can affect blood circulation, leading to increased pressure on the veins in the anus and rectum, creating a favorable environment for hemorrhoids to develop. Factors such as stress and poor dietary habits can also contribute to the development of hemorrhoids in office workers. Dr. Hau emphasizes that early detection and treatment of hemorrhoids are essential to avoid complications and reduce costs. He advises people with office jobs to take regular breaks from sitting, stay hydrated, manage stress, and maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine to prevent hemorrhoids.

Other groups at risk for hemorrhoids include long-distance drivers, sedentary individuals, pregnant women, and those with constipation or chronic diarrhea. Treatment for hemorrhoids varies depending on the severity and type of hemorrhoids, with options ranging from medication and lifestyle adjustments for milder cases to surgical procedures for more severe cases.

Many patients do not seek treatment until their symptoms become severe, such as burning pain, bleeding or prolapse of the anal area.

In conclusion, hemorrhoids are a common health concern that can significantly impact a person’s health and quality of life. It is essential to understand how they develop and take preventative measures such as taking regular breaks from sitting, staying hydrated, managing stress, maintaining a healthy diet
