Championing Healthcare Equity: Insights from UPMC Health Plan’s National Minority Health Month Podcast Series

National Minority Health Month is a time to celebrate and recognize the importance of healthcare equity, and we are excited to share our special month-long podcast series in partnership with UPMC Health Plan. Throughout this limited series, we have had the privilege of engaging in conversations with leading experts in the field of healthcare and health equity.

In our final episode, we are joined by Janine Jelks-Seale, MSPPM, who brings an impressive background as an R&D specialist and a deep commitment to advancing equity in healthcare. As director of health equity at UPMC Health Plan, Janine uses her skills and knowledge to work towards both short-term and long-term goals aimed at reducing health disparities and promoting health inclusion.

Our conversation focuses on developing effective strategies to address health disparities, which Janine emphasizes are rooted in social determinants of health. By taking an intersectional approach that considers both member characteristics and geographical factors, we can better identify populations at higher risk for adverse outcomes due to social determinants of health. One example of UPMC Health Plan’s commitment to promoting equity is the recent launch of its LGBTQIA+ Affirming Provider designation within its online provider directory.

We hope you have enjoyed our podcast series so far, and encourage you to explore our other episodes available on various podcast services such as iTunes, TuneIn, Stitcher, and Spotify. Thank you for joining us on this journey towards advancing healthcare equity for all.
