How Americans perceive technology companies

America’s Concerns Over Social Media’s Political Power: A Pew Research Center Survey

A new survey from the Pew Research Center has revealed that most Americans are expressing concerns about social media’s role in politics and its impact on the country. The research found that Democrats show a particularly uptick in these worries, with a majority of them believing that major technology companies display bias towards liberals.

The survey focused on three main areas: Social media’s impact on politics and the country, Political censorship and bias in Big Tech, and Government regulation of technology companies. Since 2020, there has been a notable increase in the number of Americans, especially Democrats, who believe that social media companies have too much political power. In February 2024, a survey of 10,133 U.S. adults revealed that roughly 78% of Americans feel that these companies have too much power and influence in politics, up from 72% in 2020. Only 16% believe that social media companies have the right amount of political influence, while a mere 4% believe they do not have enough power.

The growing concerns about the influence of social media on politics and the country were highlighted by Democrats who showed an increasing worry about the power held by these companies. On the other hand, Republicans were more likely to perceive bias towards liberals in major technology companies. The future of social media and technology regulation in the United States remains uncertain as these concerns and perceptions continue to shape public opinion.

Overall, this survey underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability from social media platforms when it comes to their political activities. As these companies continue to wield significant influence over public discourse and political outcomes, it is crucial that they are held accountable for their actions and ensure that their policies do not unfairly target certain groups or individuals based on their political beliefs or affiliations.
