Finding Alternative Suppliers: The Impact of the War of Iron Swords on Israel’s Trade with Turkey
The War of Iron Swords has caused a significant deterioration in trade relations between Israel and Turkey, resulting in the Ministry of Agriculture seeking alternative suppliers for vegetables and fruits. The import of onions, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, tomatoes, and pears from Turkey has significantly decreased due to the halt in trading. However, the Ministry of Agriculture assures that there will be no shortage of these goods as agricultural imports from Turkey have been declining since the start of the war and their share has decreased significantly.
For instance, in April only 70 tons out of 3000 tons imported into Israel came from Turkey. On the other hand, Israel’s agricultural exports to Turkey are modest but essential to its economy. Annual imports include dates worth $16 million and vegetable seeds worth $11 million. Currently, there is no reciprocal influence on Turkey’s economy from Israel. Therefore, finding new suppliers for these goods is crucial to ensure that Israeli stores have access to fresh produce continuously.
The Ministry of Agriculture is actively working to maintain a steady supply chain while addressing any potential gaps in imports from Turkey. While it may take time to find new suppliers who can meet Israel’s demands for quality produce at competitive prices, the ministry remains committed to ensuring that Israeli consumers continue to enjoy fresh vegetables and fruits without interruption.
