Broward School Board Member Resigns After Health Concerns, Leaving District on Path to Fourth Superintendent in Four Years

Broward School Board member, Dr. Peter Licata announced his resignation during a recent meeting. According to Licata, he made the decision to step down due to health concerns after seeking medical treatment for several months. He informed the board about his decision after consulting with his family, including his wife and four adult children. After discussing the matter with his doctors, Licata decided that it was best for him to retire from his role as an educator after more than 30 years in South Florida.

Following Licata’s resignation, the board voted 8-1 to replace him with Howard Hepburn, a deputy superintendent within the district. This move comes after Licata took over the position from former school Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright, who was removed due to her leadership style after serving for only about a year. As of July of the previous year, Licata had been leading Broward County Public Schools, the sixth-largest school system in the nation and second-largest in Florida.

Licata expressed gratitude for the community’s trust and support during his tenure as superintendent. He stated that he believes that Broward County Public Schools is on track for even greater accomplishments in the future.
