Umbilical area necrosis following abdominal liposuction

Beauty procedure gone wrong: A woman’s near-death experience with abdominal liposuction

A 42-year-old woman underwent abdominal liposuction and scar removal at a spa, but a few days later, she experienced extensive bruising and necrosis around her navel and waist. She sought treatment at Hanoi Medical University Hospital after two weeks of receiving care at a hospital in Thanh Hoa. A computed tomography scan revealed diffuse subcutaneous tissue infiltration in the abdomen, flanks, and a collection of subcutaneous fluid.

The patient’s condition was complicated, as described by Dr. Hoang Hong, Head of the Department of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The skin around the abdomen, navel, and the area surrounding the navel were severely necrotic and infected. Dr. Hong emphasized that prompt treatment is crucial to prevent a life-threatening infection. The patient is currently undergoing comprehensive care and will undergo debridement to remove the necrotic skin, restore the abdominal wall and navel area when stable.

Unfortunately, cases of complications arising from beauty treatments performed by unlicensed establishments and inexperienced professionals are not uncommon. Patients have suffered punctures in the lungs, liver, and intestinal perforations leading to peritonitis. There have been instances of cerebral embolism resulting in hemiplegia, aphasia, fascial necrosis of the abdominal wall, pulmonary embolism, organ embolism, and even death.

To prevent such complications from occurring again in the future, Dr. Hong advises individuals seeking beauty treatments to choose licensed facilities with well-trained doctors in cosmetic plastic surgery to prioritize safety and expertise when undergoing cosmetic procedures.

It is essential for patients seeking cosmetic procedures to be aware of their options carefully before choosing any establishment or professional for their treatments. They must ensure that they receive proper training from licensed medical professionals who have experience with similar procedures before making any decisions about their body appearance goals.

In conclusion, while cosmetic surgery can enhance one’s appearance significantly, it is crucial to approach these procedures with caution and seek only reputable medical facilities that prioritize safety above all else. Patients must be vigilant about choosing licensed professionals with extensive training to avoid complications such as those experienced by this unfortunate 42-year-old woman.
