Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup Golden Ball Trophy, Stolen, to Go Up for Auction

Rare Opportunity to Own a Piece of Soccer History: The Auction of Diego Maradona’s Golden Ball Trophy.

In June, the Golden Ball trophy that esteemed Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona won at the 1986 FIFA World Cup will be auctioned by Aguttes auction house in France. The late soccer icon’s Golden Ball is expected to fetch “millions” of dollars at the auction on June 6th.

Maradona, who passed away at the age of 60 in 2020, is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, alongside Pelé, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo. His most significant achievement came in 1986 when he led Argentina to their second World Cup victory, scoring five goals in the tournament and winning the Golden Ball for the most outstanding player.

However, Maradona’s Golden Ball was stolen before it could be displayed in a museum or exhibited in an auction room. It was only recently recovered and has been verified as authentic by Aguttes. The upcoming auction on June 6th will make Maradona’s award the first FIFA World Cup Golden Ball ever to be sold at auction.
