Liberty Athletes Eye Olympic Qualification at World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas

On May 4-5, the World Athletics Relays will be held at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas. During the event, three Liberty athletes, Omari Lewis, Reese Webster, and former All-American Alejandro Perlaza Zapata will compete for Olympic qualifying spots. The relay squads from 54 nations will be vying for these spots during the competition.

On the first day of competition, the top two teams from each heat will move on to the finals on day two, securing their spots at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Teams in the finals will compete for prize money and obtain Olympic lane seeding positions. Additionally, teams that do not advance on the first day will have another chance on day two to secure their spot in Paris.

The events on May 4 will be televised on Peacock, with the mixed 4 x 400 heats starting at 7:05 p.m. Eastern, followed by the women’s 4 x 100 heats at 7:50 and the men’s 4 x 100 heats at 8:25. The races on May 5 will be shown on both Peacock and CNBC, starting at 7:05 p.m. Eastern.

Perlaza Zapata is looking to qualify for his third Olympics after representing Colombia in Rio and Tokyo editions of World Athletics Championships. Lewis and Webster aim to make their Olympics debuts in Paris this summer with track and field events scheduled for August at Stade de France in Paris.

Lewis and Webster previously competed for Trinidad and Tobago at the World Athletics Relays held in Budapest Hungary finishing in twelfth place in men’s four hundred meters relay race.

After this competition they are heading to El Paso Texas where CUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are taking place from May10th-12th at UTEP’s Kidd Field
