Former Stanford president receives National Science Board award

John Hennessy Honored with Prestigious Vannevar Bush Award for his Contributions to Computer Science and STEM Education

John Hennessy, a renowned computer scientist and former president of Stanford University, has been chosen as the recipient of the prestigious Vannevar Bush Award by the National Science Board. The award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to science and technology throughout their lives.

Hennessy’s groundbreaking work in computer architecture and his commitment to developing the future STEM workforce align with the values of Vannevar Bush, who inspired many with his dedication to advancing science and technology. In a statement released by the NSB, Hennessy expressed his passion for lifelong learning, echoing Bush’s belief that science is the new frontier with countless questions waiting to be answered.

Currently, Hennessy holds positions as the chairperson of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, and the Shriram Family Director of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program at Stanford University. He will receive the Vannevar Bush Award on May 1, 2024 at the National Science Foundation Awards Gala taking place at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Dario Gil, chair of NSB’s External Engagement Committee and senior vice president and director of IBM research expressed excitement over Hennessy being selected for this award this year. He praised Hennessy’s research for its positive impacts on national economy and security.
