China’s Tourism Industry Bounces Back as Chinese Tourists Resume International Travel
As the world’s largest travel market, China has been heavily impacted by the pandemic. However, with the extended May Labor Day holiday approaching, Chinese tourists are now making their way overseas in numbers that are nearing pre-pandemic levels. This surge in outbound trips is helping to revitalize the travel industry and bring hope to those who have been affected by the pandemic.
According to data from ForwardKeys, a travel forecasting company, outbound trips between April 27 and May 5 are only 7% below levels seen in 2019. This is a significant increase compared to earlier expectations based on ticket sales at the start of April. The last-minute rush has propelled the number of outbound trips to almost pre-pandemic levels, indicating a strong desire among Chinese tourists to resume their international travels.
In addition to this, domestic ticket sales have already exceeded 2019 levels by 4% for the same period. This rebound in Chinese tourism is a positive sign for the global travel industry as it indicates a growing interest in international travel among Chinese tourists.
As more countries reopen their borders and ease travel restrictions, it is expected that this trend will continue to grow, further boosting the recovery of the travel sector. The resumption of international travel among Chinese tourists will not only benefit China’s tourism industry but also contribute significantly to the global economy.
