Honeywell’s Hydrocracking Technology Converts Biomass into Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Honeywell’s Groundbreaking Technology to Revolutionize Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production with DG Fuels

In recent years, the aviation industry has been facing challenges related to carbon emissions. The demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has been rising, and the limited availability of traditional feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste oils has made it difficult for the industry to meet its sustainability goals. To address this issue, Honeywell has introduced a new hydrocracking technology that can produce SAF from biomass.

The FT Unicracking technology is designed to process waste biomass into SAF at a lower cost compared to other hydroprocessing technologies. This process involves extracting liquids and waxes from processed biomass sources such as crop leftovers, wood waste, or food scraps. The resulting SAF meets industry standards with a lower environmental impact than traditional fossil-based jet fuels.

Honeywell’s new technology not only produces more SAF but also reduces costs by up to 20% and minimizes by-product waste streams compared to other hydroprocessing technologies. This makes it an attractive option for the aviation industry looking for a more sustainable solution to its fuel needs.

DG Fuels has selected Honeywell’s FT Unicracking technology for its biofuels manufacturing facility in Louisiana, which will become the world’s largest SAF producer from the FT process. The facility is expected to produce 13,000 barrels of SAF daily by 2028, providing fuel for over 30,000 transatlantic flights annually and significantly reducing carbon emissions from global air travel.

Michael Darcy, CEO of DG Fuels believes that utilizing Honeywell’s advanced technology will help the airline industry achieve its goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050. This is a significant step forward in supporting sustainable air travel and addressing one of the biggest challenges facing the aviation industry today.
