93-year-old man stays strong with the help of his habits

John Starbrook’s Marathon Journey: Inspiring Older People to Stay Active and Healthy

John Starbrook, a fitness enthusiast and an ambassador for Age UK, has been inspiring older people to stay active for over a decade. At the age of 53, he began participating in marathons and has since completed 52 of them. His dedication to exercise has helped him maintain strong muscles, flexible bones and joints.

Starbrook believes that turning 50 doesn’t mean one is old and encourages a healthy lifestyle. He advises older people to start exercising by jogging 1 to 2 km and go to the gym at least once a week, but not to overdo it. He attributes his athletic spirit and good health to genetics, along with a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet.

In addition to running marathons, Starbrook is also an accomplished swimmer. For nearly 80 years, he honed his skills in the military medical force and still maintains a habit of swimming short distances three times a week, combined with playing water polo. To celebrate his 80th birthday, he swam 1 mile across Corryvreckan Bay, between the Scottish islands of Jura and Scarba.

Experts agree that jogging can benefit the musculoskeletal system and joints as well as improve heart health. Studies show that running at a moderate pace can reduce the risk of death from various diseases. Despite facing health challenges such as arthritis and irregular heartbeat, Starbrook chooses to focus on positivity and finds ways to improve his health through reasonable methods.

Overall, Starbrook’s dedication to physical fitness and inspiring others to stay active showcases the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as one ages.
