Harnessing the Power of AI in Education: CSUN’s Digital Equity Day Showcases Student-Driven Innovations

California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is hosting its third annual Digital Equity Day, with a focus on the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Distinguished speakers Stephen Than and Deone Zell will discuss the transformative potential of AI in education. Their insights will delve into the revolutionary possibilities that AI presents for reshaping teaching methodologies, breaking down barriers to learning, and ensuring equal opportunities for all students.

Dr. Sheba Lo will address the impact of AI on race, culture, and accessibility, urging people to confront biases embedded within technology. Meanwhile, CSUN’s AI Jam 2024 competition will showcase student-led projects using AI to address campus challenges. The competition aims to foster innovation and creativity among students as they introduce the problem and their project via AI technology in this showcase and awards.

The 1st place winners of the competition are Luis Olmos, Victoria Miteva, and Vaishnavi Sen who designed the “AI Academic Course Planning Program.” This program leverages data analytics to provide personalized academic planning to students based on their strengths, weaknesses, and goals. The 2nd place winners are Conner Nehru Juman and Cameel Emily Juman who designed “MatBot by Chatty Matty” to solve scheduling course and advising issues. The bot uses natural language processing to understand student queries and provides relevant information in real-time.

The 3rd place winners are Alberto Rubalcava and Alberto Sandoval who designed “Course Compass” to help students navigate their academic journey with clear guidance. The app uses machine learning algorithms to analyze student performance data and provide personalized recommendations for course selection, study habits, and career pathways. These student-led teams have demonstrated a commitment to innovation by refining their AI-powered solutions to address real-world challenges on our campus.

In conclusion, CSUN’s Digital Equity Day focuses on harnessing the power of AI in education by providing equal opportunities for all students while addressing real-world challenges through innovative solutions developed by students themselves.
