Xu, an aspiring nuclear physicist, faced rejection by the School of Physics after viral posts of him torturing and killing cats in his dorm room circulated online. After being rejected by Nanjing University, Xu applied to Lanzhou University in northwestern China and was granted an interview. However, he declined to speak with a mainland news outlet due to concerns about public opinion.
