CNN Unveils Earth-Dedicated Editorial Series, Highlights Stunning Nature Photography Awards

CNN’s Call to Earth editorial series is dedicated to reporting on the environmental challenges facing our planet and the solutions to these issues. The series has partnered with Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative to raise awareness and educate the public on important sustainability issues, as well as inspire positive action.

The World Nature Photography Awards have recognized two photographers for their outstanding work in capturing the beauty of our planet. Tracey Lund from the UK won first prize in the category of Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments for a photograph of gannets fighting for a fish in Scotland’s Shetland Islands. Meanwhile, Ivan Pedretti of Italy won second place in this category for a magical photo of winter in Stokksnes, Iceland.

Lund captured this stunning image using a DSLR camera in waterproof housing while on holiday from her boat. She stated that thousands of gannets were diving into the sea after locally caught fish, creating an unbelievable spectacle that she was thrilled to witness and document through photography. The awards featured categories such as animal portraits, plants and fungi, and invertebrate, amphibian, and reptile behavior.

Pedretti shared his appreciation for the contrast of colors in his landscape photo, which he took during his visit to Iceland. He said he loved the combination of white mountains against black dunes with yellow grass. The World Nature Photography Awards aim to promote photography and contribute to environmental causes by planting a tree for each entry into the competition.
