Can the demarcation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border finally end the 100-year conflict?

Border Demarcation Aims for Peace and Stability in the Caucasus: A Step Towards Resolving Conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan

After years of conflict in the Caucasus region, Armenia and Azerbaijan have announced the start of demarcating their common borders. This significant step is aimed at resolving border disputes and preventing further conflicts between the two countries.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently agreed to return four border towns to Azerbaijan, sparking protests by Armenians who fear isolation and loss of property. However, both countries acknowledge the importance of resolving border disputes to maintain peace and stability in the region.

The Ministry of the Interior of Azerbaijan has confirmed that experts are currently clarifying coordinates based on a geodesic study, while the Armenian Ministry of the Interior has stated that there will be no transfer of territory during this process.

Both former Soviet republics have faced off in two wars over the years, resulting in thousands of casualties on both sides. After Armenia’s defeat in 2020, it had to relinquish control over significant parts of Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan, ending a decades-long conflict in the region.

The demarcation of borders based on Soviet-era maps is seen as a necessary step to prevent further conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan. With this move towards peace and stability, both countries can hope for a brighter future for their people and their region.
