Coco Gauff within reach of surpassing Aryna Sabalenka for world No. 2 spot at Madrid Open

Amanda Gauff Eyes Another Grand Slam Title in Madrid, as Sabalenka and Collins Lead the American Women’s Charge

In Madrid, the third-seeded Gauff will start her campaign against Arantxa Rus. If she advances, Amanda Anisimova could be her next opponent. Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka is a potential last 16 opponent for Gauff. On the other hand, Sabalenka will face either Magda Linette or Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opening match, with Danielle Collins possibly being her last-16 opponent.

Gauff and Collins are among the 13 American women in the Madrid singles draw, which is the most representation from any nation. Gauff’s record coming into Madrid is 19-6 for the year, tied for the fifth-most wins on the 2024 season. However, she is just 3-3 in Madrid. Her best performance in the Spanish capital was making it to the last 16 in 2022. Sabalenka, on the other hand, is a two-time champion in Madrid and has defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Ashleigh Barty in previous title matches there.

After winning the US Open in 2023, Gauff reached a career-high world No. 3 ranking. Her victory over Sabalenka with a score of 2-6, 6-3, and 6-2 marked her first Grand Slam singles title.
