Review of Anti-Doping Procedures in World Aquatics Following Chinese Swimmers Scandal

Wada Under Fire: Inside the Backlash and Review over Chinese Swimmers Case at Tokyo Olympics

The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has recently come under fire for its handling of a case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who were allowed to compete in the Tokyo Games despite testing positive for a banned substance. In response, World Aquatics has established a five-person anti-doping audit review committee to investigate the matter and improve the federation’s anti-doping review and decision-making process.

The committee members appointed are Miguel Cardenal, Ken Lalo, Annabelle Williams, Florent Manaudou, and Fernando Possenti, with the goal of learning from the situation and enhancing the organization’s ability to handle similar cases in the future. This will help maintain athletes’ confidence in the system and ensure that any future incidents are handled appropriately.

In addition to World Aquatics’ internal investigation, Wada has also initiated an independent investigation led by Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier to scrutinize its handling of the case. The findings of this investigation are anticipated within two months and aim to address any concerns about the anti-doping movement and assure athletes heading into the Paris Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, US athlete representative organizations have called for an independent investigation into Wada’s actions, while International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach has expressed his trust in Wada’s integrity. Despite these calls for accountability, it remains to be seen what consequences Wada will face for its mishandling of this case.
