Vietnam: Cataracts Still Leading Cause of Blindness Despite Advancements in Vitreoretinal Surgery

The retina is a critical component of the human eye, and diseases related to it can lead to blindness. However, cataracts are still the leading cause of blindness in Vietnam. This information was shared by Prof. Dr. Do Nhu Hon, Chairman of the Vietnam Vitreoretinal Association, at a scientific conference on new trends in vitreoretinal surgery and ocular reconstructive surgery. The conference allowed doctors and experts to exchange information and stay updated on advancements in the field of ophthalmology.

The retina is a thin, transparent structure located at the back of the eye that is light-sensitive. In contrast, the vitreous humor or vitreous body fills the center of the eye and is its largest structure internally.
