April 29th marks the date for FHSU’s upcoming Science Café focusing on retroviruses

Uncovering the Hidden Hitchhikers: An Insight into Endogenous Retroviruses and their Impact on Host Organisms at The Science Café at FHSU

The Science Café at Fort Hays State University is taking place on Monday, April 29th. Dr. Eric Gillock, a professor of biological sciences at FHSU, will lead a presentation on “Endogenous retroviruses: Hidden hitchhikers and how they spread”. The event is sponsored by the Science and Mathematics Education Institute of FHSU and will be held at The Venue in Thirsty’s Brew Pub & Grill.

As genetic parasites found in the genomes of most eukaryotic cells, endogenous retroviruses are similar to unwanted house guests that make themselves at home without invitation. They are difficult to remove and can cause problems for their host organisms.

The Science Café presentations are open to the public and completely free of charge. For more information or inquiries, please direct them to Cari Rohleder at [email protected] or 785-628-4743. Additional details can be found on the FHSU Science and Mathematics Education Institute website, the FHSU Science Café webpage, and the FHSU Science Café Facebook page.
