Science teacher from Arlington nominated for prestigious White House honors

Three Virginia Teachers named finalists for the prestigious 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Laurie Sullivan, an educator at Barrett Elementary School in Arlington, is one of three finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. She teaches science and technology in the Project Discovery program at the school. This award is considered the top honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers in the nation.

The other two finalists are from Goochland County and Martinsville, Virginia. They were selected by review committees organized by the Virginia Department of Education. Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons expressed pride in the selection of these three teachers from Virginia and is honored to have them represent the state in the national competition.

The national selection committee will now review the applications of the state finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The winners of this prestigious award will be announced by the White House. The competition recognizes educators who excel in teaching mathematics and science and have a significant impact on their students and schools.
