Steward Health Care to Sell 31 Hospitals, Including Nine in Massachusetts, Amidst Bankruptcy Filing
Steward Health Care has announced plans to sell its 31 hospitals in the United States, including nine in Massachusetts. Following a declaration of bankruptcy, the private company intends to auction off its hospitals to help pay down its $9 billion in debt. The auctions for hospitals outside of Florida are scheduled for June 28, while those for the nine Florida hospitals will take place on July 30. Steward, based in Dallas, operates hospitals in eight states.
Despite the bankruptcy filing, both Steward and Massachusetts officials do not anticipate any disruptions in day-to-day hospital operations. Governor Healey has launched a hotline and website for patients to address any concerns they may have related to Steward Health Care and its bankruptcy declaration. She has also been vocal about issues of greed, mismanagement, and lack of transparency within the company.
In response to Steward’s financial troubles, Governor Healey has been working with stakeholders to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future and to ensure that patients receive the care and resources they need. Steward’s decision to sell its hospitals marks a significant development in the healthcare industry, with implications for patients and healthcare workers in Massachusetts and other states where Steward operates.
