Russia is accused by United States of deploying chemical weapons in Ukraine

Russia’s Use of Chloropicrin as a Chemical Weapon in Ukraine Violates Ban: A Closer Look at the Latest Conflict

In January, Ukraine accused Russia of using chloropicrin as a chemical weapon in violation of the ban treaty. The US State Department confirmed that Russia had used chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces, breaching the Chemical Weapons Convention. The US also reported that Russia had used riot control substances in violation of the agreement, as substances like tear gas are prohibited in warfare according to the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern that the use of chemicals like chloropicrin was not an isolated incident. It suggested that Russian forces may have used these substances to gain tactical advantages on the battlefield. Ukrainska Pravda reported that the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Armed Forces had also accused Russia of using chloropicrin.

Chloropicrin, originally used as a chemical weapon in World War I, is now utilized in agriculture as an insecticide. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons classifies chloropicrin as an asphyxiant gas that affects the lungs. Despite these accusations, Russia denies having an arsenal of chemical weapons intended for military use.
