Businesses in the area prepare for the upcoming tourist season with a round-up of activities.

Rhode Island Hospitality Industry Prepares for Busy Summer Season, Despite Struggles with Workforce Shortages

As the busy tourist season in Narragansett, Rhode Island approaches, Joe Viele, the executive director of the Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, expressed optimism about the upcoming influx of visitors. Despite signs of a strong local economy, businesses in the area are still facing challenges in finding help in the hospitality industry.

Many businesses have taken steps to improve their offerings ahead of the pre-summer tourist season. For example, O’Reilly Auto Parts opened a store in Wakefield and Celeste completed renovations in Narragansett. Additionally, Tower Hill Brewing Co. opened its doors in Wakefield and offers craft beers made on site in their taproom.

To entice tourists and locals alike, Tower Hill Brewing Co. also allows patrons to bring their own food as they do not have a kitchen on site. The South County Tourism Council is promoting spring specials at various businesses and restaurants on their website, www.southcountyri.com.

Despite these improvements and promotions, businesses in the hospitality industry continue to face challenges in finding help. With limited resources and competition from other industries, it can be difficult for these businesses to attract and retain workers. However, Viele remains optimistic that with continued efforts from both private and public sector partners, the region will be able to overcome these challenges and thrive during the upcoming tourist season.
