The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced its plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into sports, in line with the global trend of leveraging rapidly advancing technology. This move aligns with the organization’s commitment to responsibly harnessing the extensive capabilities of AI, which has the potential to identify talented athletes, customize training techniques and enhance fairness in games through improved judging.
Thomas Bach, IOC President, emphasized the importance of embracing change in order to uphold the distinctiveness of the Olympic Games and maintain the significance of sports. He spoke about this at a press conference held at the former London Olympic Park, stressing that AI technology would be used to safeguard athletes against online harassment and enhance viewers’ experience by partnering with broadcasters to improve at-home viewing.
The IOC’s announcement of its AI strategy precedes the upcoming Paris Olympics, which is set to commence in less than 100 days. In addition to optimizing judging processes, the IOC aims to deploy AI technology for security measures like video surveillance systems equipped with AI-powered cameras designed to detect potential security threats such as abandoned packages or crowd disturbances.
