One-Year Wonders: How One-Year Deals are Becoming More Common in Free Agency

Free agency began eight days ago and most of the top available players have already signed with new teams or been tagged. However, a recent report by Charean Williams shows that only 18 out of 104 players are still available to be signed. The top player remaining is cornerback Xavien Howard, followed by players such as guard Connor Williams, tackle Trent Brown, and cornerback Steven Nelson. Other notable players on the list include safety Justin Simmons, edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, and cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

As free agency progresses, we are seeing more players signing one-year deals. While some players may still get a good payday for a single season, most of the big money has already been spent. Players like Odell Beckham Jr. who landed a one-year, $15 million fully-guaranteed deal with incentives last year after the initial free agency frenzy are becoming more common. With quality players still available, teams will be looking to fill roster gaps with strategic one-year signings.
