Local Nonprofit, Momentum Center, Wins Hometown Health Hero Award for Promoting Health and Well-being within the Community
The Momentum Center, a local nonprofit organization located in Grand Haven and Holland, has been recognized for its efforts in promoting health within the community. They recently received the Hometown Health Hero Award from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) for their work in improving the health and well-being of residents in Michigan.
The MDHHS Director, Elizabeth Hertel, emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of healthcare professionals and advocates who have a positive impact on the state. The Momentum Center provides a supportive environment for youth over age 11 and adults with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities. They offer a variety of social and recreational activities, classes, events, and meals to allow members to interact without fear of stigma or stereotypes.
Barbara Lee VanHorssen, director of the Momentum Center, accepted the award on behalf of the organization at an event held in Lansing. The organization was nominated by Cindy Anderson from Grand Haven. Additionally, the Ottawa County Migrant Health Task Force also received an honorable mention for their contributions to promoting health within the community.
This recognition highlights the importance of community-based organizations like the Momentum Center in supporting individuals’ health and well-being in Michigan. Their dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive space for individuals with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities is truly commendable.
