Tebas expresses concern over costly goal-line technology and confirms La Liga’s plans to play games internationally

La Liga’s Global Ambitions: Expanding Footprint and Future Plans, Tebas Discusses in Interview with Expansion

Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, discussed the league’s plans for the future in an interview with Expansion. One of these plans is to play official matches abroad, which he believes could happen as early as the 2025-26 season. Tebas emphasized the importance of expanding La Liga’s global footprint, particularly in North America, where it is already a major player.

However, Tebas acknowledged that competing leagues pose challenges and that innovation is necessary. He highlighted the need for La Liga to adapt and evolve in order to maintain its position as one of the world’s premier football leagues.

Regarding goal-line technology, Tebas expressed concerns about its effectiveness and cost. Instead, he proposed increasing the use of cameras to assist referees. While he acknowledged that goal-line technology may not be perfect, he believed it was still important to invest in it to improve officiating standards. Ultimately, Tebas advocated for a more cost-effective approach that would allow for better decision making on the field without breaking the bank.
