HCC Construction Technology Students Assist Waynesville Housing Authority

Haywood Community College’s Construction Technology Students Partner with Waynesville Housing Authority to Enhance Local Housing Solutions

Haywood Community College’s Construction Technology students recently partnered with the Waynesville Housing Authority to provide additional storage space to homes in the Ninevah housing community. The project aligns with the housing authority’s aim to address the housing needs of the local community through collaborative projects like this one.

Students in the program were tasked with preparing the foundations for the storage sheds by laying out and leveling blocks, as well as framing floor systems with plywood decking. These practical skills are a perfect fit for the curriculum of their course, which emphasizes residential framing. The Waynesville Housing Authority plans to install pre-manufactured sheds on the prepared sites at a later date.

As a member of the Construction Skills & Technology Advisory Board, Waynesville Housing Authority Director John Bryson has been actively involved in working with HCC’s construction program on various projects. This partnership provides students with opportunities to apply their skills in real-world scenarios, giving them hands-on experience that will benefit them throughout their careers.

Classes in the Construction Skills & Technology program are offered throughout the year, covering topics such as basic construction skills, HVACR, construction technology, and plumbing. Those interested in learning more about these classes can visit Haywood Community College’s website at haywood.edu/continuing-education/construction or contact John Bryson directly at waynesvillehousing@gmail.com for more information about Haywood County’s affordable housing programs and initiatives.
