Haiti on the Brink: Caribbean Community Leaders Agree on Political Transitional Solution Amid Crisis – New Council Elected to Restore Order and Peace”.

The Caribbean Community Caricom, meeting in Jamaica on March 11th, agreed upon a political transitional solution for crisis-stricken Haiti. Five days after the swearing in of a newly created interim presidential council, Edgard Leblanc Fils was elected as its chairman by the seven voting members. The council also elected former sports minister Fritz Bélizaire as the new interim prime minister. However, there were allegations that his election was not carried out according to the rules.

The Transitional Council’s tasks include appointing a new interim government and preparing for Haiti’s first elections since 2016. The goal is to have a new president by February 7, 2026 and coordinate the deployment of a multinational force to assist the Haitian police against gangs. Prior to the latest escalation, armed groups controlled 80% of Port-au-Prince, leading to widespread displacement and worsening hunger crisis. Scheduled flights were canceled and foreign diplomats and citizens were evacuated from Haiti due to certificate verification issues.
