Gov. Moore’s Military Training Proves Invaluable in Navigating the Crisis of the Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse
In March 2023, Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland received a call that no one could have anticipated – the Francis Scott Key Bridge had collapsed into the Patapsco River after being struck by a massive cargo ship. The bridge, which had stood as a symbol of the region’s industrial history for almost 50 years, shattered into pieces, resulting in the tragic deaths of six construction workers.
Moore was faced with one of the most complex maritime and infrastructural challenges in the country. As a first-term Democratic governor, he relied on his military training to navigate this crisis. He emphasized the importance of checking on people, establishing accountability, and following up to ensure that everyone’s needs were met.
The collapse of the bridge has resulted in the temporary closure of the critical Port of Baltimore. Moore is working diligently with the state’s congressional delegation to secure federal funding to rebuild the bridge. Reflecting on his military background, he expressed how his experience leading soldiers in Afghanistan unknowingly prepared him for this moment.
Moore stressed that in times of crisis, uncertainty is the only certainty. It is essential to adapt and respond to changing circumstances effectively. His military service has taught him how to accomplish missions regardless of personal differences and highlighted that American patriotism belongs to all political parties.
As he continues to work towards rebuilding the bridge, Moore remains committed to ensuring that it serves as a symbol of hope and resilience for generations to come.
