Fifty Years of Fighting Disease: The Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Celebrates Milestone in Eastern Mediterranean Region

Today, we are gathered at a press conference to mark World Immunization Week, which coincides with an exciting milestone – 50 years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). When launched in 1974, EPI offered protection against just six childhood diseases. Today, it has expanded to protect against 13 vaccine-preventable diseases, reflecting its incredible progress.

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region alone, more than 25 million lives have been saved thanks to vaccines. Immunization has saved countless lives beyond childhood as well. Many countries in the region have introduced newer vaccines that protect against pneumonia, diarrhea, and even certain cancers. Millions of people across the region have been protected by COVID-19 vaccines. This wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering partnership of immunization partners like UNICEF and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the commitment of our member states.

While we should be proud of these achievements, there is still much work to be done. Equitable access to immunization remains a significant challenge. We must ensure that every child in every community receives their doses on time, including those who may have missed doses due to conflict or weak health systems. It is crucial that we continue to add new vaccines to national immunization schedules for continued protection throughout life for everyone.

This World Immunization Week marks an opportunity for us all to reaffirm our commitment to immunization and its power in creating a healthier future for all. Let us come together as one global community and work towards protecting every person from disease and creating a world where everyone has access to life-saving vaccines. Thank you for joining me today at this press conference as we continue our efforts towards a healthier world for all.
