The 2024 U.S. men’s national team has appointed John Hynes as their coach for the upcoming IIHF men’s world championship, which will take place in Prague and Ostrava from May 10-26. This was announced by USA Hockey on Friday. Hynes, who last coached the national team in 2019, recently completed his first season as the head coach of the Minnesota Wild in the NHL, falling short of making the playoffs. Brett Peterson, general manager of the 2024 U.S. men’s national team and a member of Florida Panthers’ management team, expressed confidence in Hynes’ leadership abilities. Peterson highlighted Hynes’ passion, energy, and extensive experience in coaching as key strengths that will benefit the national team in their quest for gold. Hynes is a native of Warwick, Rhode Island and has a longstanding history with USA Hockey having served as a head coach for the national team development program from 2003-2009. In addition to his coaching experience, he also has personal success in collegiate hockey where he competed in four NCAA Frozen Fours and secured a championship win in 1995 while playing at Boston University.
