Discovering the Past through Cincinnati’s Vibrant Murals: A Guide to Unraveling Local History

Good morning, everyone. I’m Jeff Suess, your local history guide. Today, I want to talk about Cincinnati’s murals and their significance in the city’s history. These vibrant pieces of art add a splash of color and creativity to Cincinnati’s buildings, but what truly sets them apart is their connection to our past. From canal boats to Kenner toys, they tell stories that invite us to learn more about our history.

One of my favorite murals is the gigantic one across from the Duke Energy Convention Center. It showcases portraits of 10 of Cincinnati’s most influential musicians, including James Brown, Doris Day, and the Isley Brothers. Even though I have spent years researching the city’s history, there were some names on the mural that were unfamiliar to me. I had to do some research to identify them, but the process was worth it.
