Bank of Israel Issues Coins Commemorating Black Saturday on October 7 for Independence Day

Commemorating Resilience: Israel Issues Special Coins to Mark 76th Anniversary of Declaration of Independence

The State Bank of Israel has issued commemorative coins to mark the 76th anniversary of the declaration of Independence of the State of Israel. These coins symbolize the unity and cohesion of Israelis that emerged after Black Saturday on October 7th. The Bank of Israel has been issuing Independence Day commemorative coins annually since 1958, with designs reflecting significant events in the life of Israel and its people.

The concept for this year’s coin design was inspired by the unprecedented terrorist attack and the ensuing War of Iron Swords, which brought tragedy and catastrophe as well as national unity, support, and mutual assistance among Israelis. The reverse of the coins features a sketch by artist Tsvika Roitman showing hands reaching out to each other against a backdrop of a kibbutz house and a tractor, with the number 76 prominently displayed. The obverse includes inscriptions in Hebrew, English, and Arabic alongside a symbol created by artist Eitan Alon depicting six hands holding each other.

These commemorative coins are available in denominations of 10 shekels (jewelry gold), 2 shekels (jewelry silver), and 1 shekel (plain silver) and can be purchased from the State Coinage Company of Israel. This year’s edition serves as a tribute to the resilience, unity, and strength of the Israeli people in the face of adversity.
