AP Sports Week in Pictures: Randy Vazquez on the Mound, Olympic Flame Ignited, and Nelly Korda’s Golf Course Dive

Capturing Iconic Sports Moments: The Unwavering Work of Associated Press Photographers

In recent times, Associated Press photographers have been present in some of the most iconic moments in the world of sports. From San Diego Padres pitcher Randy Vazquez working tirelessly in the shadows to the lighting of a cauldron with the Olympic flame at the ancient Parthenon temple in Athens, these photographers were there to capture it all.

One unforgettable moment came in London as Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya celebrated her victory at the London Marathon by raising her arms in triumph as she crossed the finish line. Meanwhile, Nelly Korda made history by taking a leap into a lake after winning a record-tying fifth straight LPGA tournament at the Chevron Championship in The Woodlands, Texas.

In Italy, Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Atalanta’s Gianluca Scamacca battled it out during the Europa League quarterfinals in Bergamo. And retired Greek 400-meter hurdles champion Periklis Iakovakis had an incredible honor – he was selected to light a cauldron with the Olympic flame that will burn at Paris’ upcoming Olympics.

These remarkable moments were captured by AP photographers and curated by Mike Conroy. To view more sports coverage from Associated Press, visit https://apnews.com/sports.
