The issue of an independent Palestinian state to be considered by the UN General Assembly

Breakthrough at UN: Palestine on Verge of Security Council Recognition and Full Membership

On May 10, a resolution may be submitted to the UN General Assembly recognizing Palestine as an equal member of the Security Council. This is a significant step towards achieving peace and justice for the Palestinian people.

In recent years, similar resolutions have been blocked by the United States in the UN Security Council. However, this time around, it is expected that an overwhelming majority of UN members will vote in support of the resolution.

It is important to note that decisions made by the General Assembly are advisory and do not automatically result in the creation of a Palestinian state. Nonetheless, it sends a strong message to Israel and its allies that the international community supports Palestine’s right to self-determination and recognition as a sovereign state.

Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has suggested that if the resolution is adopted, the United States should consider stopping funding to the international organization, similar to what was done with UNESCO when it granted full membership status to the Palestinian Authority. This threatens not only Palestine but also undermines democracy and human rights worldwide.

It is crucial that we remember that in 1988, the Palestinian National Council declared independence of Palestine. Although 140 UN members supported this decision and many states recognized it shortly after, it did not lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state. The international community must take action now to ensure that Palestinians have access to basic human rights and can live free from oppression and discrimination.

The adoption of this resolution would mark a major victory for Palestinians and would pave the way for lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. It is essential that we all stand together in support of this cause because it’s not just about Palestine; it’s about justice for all people who are fighting for their basic human rights.
